How police nabbed Adamawa man who fled to Ondo after choppin

Nigerian police have apprehended a man accused of chopping off his wife's head with a machete before fleeing from Adamawa to Ondo State.

According to authorities, the 40-year-old man, Riba Kwanta, killed his wife, Godiya Akwale, by cutting her neck. The crime was committed on December 3, 2023, in Bode, Shelleng Local Government Area, Adamawa State.

SP Suleiman Nguroje, a spokesperson for the state police command, confirmed his arrest to SaharaReporters on Wednesday.

He said, "He accused his wife of keeping late nights with a female friend; which is why he macheted her neck, leading to her death, locked her up in their bedroom and escaped to Ondo State. He committed the crime on December 3, 2023, in their Bode residence in Shelleng Local Government Area."

Nguroje further stated that the state Police Commissioner, Dankombo Morris, has ordered a quiet inquiry into the case and the prosecution of the culprit.

"The CP equally urged the public to avoid taking the laws into their hands," Nguroje said.

Meanwhile, twenty-nine suspects were arraigned before the Chief Magistrate Court on Wednesday for their involvement and roles in the aborted invasion of the Oyo State Government Secretariat on Saturday, April 13.

The suspects alleged to be agitators were arraigned on a count charge bothering treasonable felony, unlawful society, illegal possession of a firearm, going armed and conduct likely to cause breach of peace.

The offences, according to the Investigative Police Officer, Bakare Rasaq, an Inspector with the State Criminal Investigation Department, Iyaganku, Ibadan are contrary to and punishable under Section 516 of the Criminal Act Code, Cap 38, Vol.II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria, 2000.    

The number is an increase of nine more suspects following the parade of 20 suspects earlier paraded by the Oyo State Police Command, on Monday, April 15th.

The case with charge number Mi/520c/2024 is between the Commissioner of Police vs the 29 suspects.
