How Sales Representative Faked Own Kidnapping So Company Wou

A sales representative in a pharmaceutical company has been arrested by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping And Cybercrime Unit of the Edo State Police Command for faking his own kidnapping.

25-year-old Chikezie Precious was employed as a sales rep. with the company three years ago and supplies drugs to most of the southern states in the country.

The Standard Gazette reports that Chikezie owes the company more than N900,000 from drug sales and in a move to get the company to write off his debt, went into hiding while raising a false alarm that he was kidnapped.

He dumped the company van on his way from Auchi along Ewohimi-Agbor road, left the key in the driver's seat, and took public transport to Benin City, where he stayed in a hotel.

The suspect then told his friend to call the company's management and inform them that he has been kidnapped by unknown gunmen after which he switched off his mobile phones.

The matter was immediately reported to the Igbanke Police Station, where the company van was recovered. The case was subsequently transferred to the office of the Anti-Kidnapping and Cybercrime Unit of the Edo State Command for further investigation.

In the course of the investigation, Chikezie was traced to the hotel and apprehended by operatives of the unit.

While speaking to crime correspondent, Festus Alenkhe, the suspect admitted to having faked his own kidnapping so that the company could write off his debt.

His words, "I owe my company over N900,000 and they have been disturbing me to pay back. After too much stress, I decided to fake my kidnapping to see if they could write off the debt for me. I lodged in the hotel at Ikpoba Hill in Benin city and asked my friend to call my boss to announce my kidnapping."

When asked about the whereabouts of his friend who made the call, he said: "I really don't know where he is right now. Maybe he has escaped."

SP Bello Kontongs, the spokesperson of the State Police Command, confirmed the arrest and disclosed that the suspect will be charged to court upon the completion of the investigation.

"The suspect will be thoroughly investigated, profiled and charged to court", he stated.
