How search for Super Eagles coach began — NFF boss Gasau

The Nigeria Football Federation President Ibrahim Gasau revealed on Monday when the football authorities began the extensive search for a successor to Jose Peseiro who decided to turn down an offer from the Glass House to extend his contract.

Peseiro led the three-time Africans to the final of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire where they lost 2-1 to hosts in the final.

Gasau fielded from sports journalists on Monday at the unveiling ceremony of Finidi George at the NFF Secreetariat.

"When we returned from the Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire, we began the search for a new Head Coach. There was a plethora of foreign applicants, far more than the indigenous applicants," Gasau revealed the plans that began after the AFCON campaign.

"However, we undertook a thorough process that has produced an indigenous coach and we are very happy about that. Finidi George was part of the technical crew that came close to winning the AFCON, and we have faith in him that he will lead the team to the title next time.

"Our objective now is to ensure the enthronement of excellence at all levels of the national teams.

Gasau then disclosed that Finidi has "been given the free hand" to pick his assistants and that the tactician has gone for former international temmate, Daniel Amokachi as well as the duo of Benjamin James and goalkeeper, Olatunji Baruwa.

Also named as part of the technical crew as per the Communications department of the Nigeria Football Federation are the duo of Chima Onyeike who is the fitness trainer and Mehmet Oturk who will work as opposition analyst.
