Hundreds Rescued After Fire Outbreak On Ferry Heading From G

Hundreds of people have been rescued from a ferry that caught fire between Greece and Italy, with 288 people on board.

According to Greek authorities, the Italian-flagged Euroferry Olympia had sailed from Igoumenitsa, the largest port in western Greece, and was headed to the Italian port of Brindisi. The fire broke out near the island of Corfu in the Ionian Sea.

The secretary of state for the Merchant Navy, Kostas Katsafados told a Greek radio station, Skai on Friday that all passengers were safe and on rescue boats.

The passengers and crew, who were evacuated on lifeboats, were taken to Corfu. There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries.

The incident happened around 4:30 a.m. on Friday, and the cause of the fire is still unknown, although, an investigation has began.
