Residents have been ordered to take shelter on the Turks and Caicos Islands as Hurricane Fiona kills 3.
Aljazeera reports that Fiona dumped torrential rain on the Dominican Republic, killing 3 and causing widespread power blackouts across the islands.
The storm on Tuesday was on track to pass close to the eastern end of the Turks and Caicos Islands before heading for the southern Bahamas.
It was on course to become the first “major hurricane” of the 2022 season if it becomes a category three storm, according to the United States National Hurricane Center.
The government’s National Emergency Operations Center (NEOC) told residents of the islands to shelter in place and ordered businesses to close.
“All persons are to remain indoors at their residence, place of safety or where they seek shelter until the NEOC issues NATIONAL ALL CLEAR," It said.
