'I Am Nazzy' Review: An Ambitious But Mediocre Perspective On Mental Health

'I Am Nazzy' Review: An Ambitious But Mediocre Perspective O

Nollywood has ushered in a new era, with movies spreading awareness about mental health while delivering the romance and lighthearted comedy that we all enjoy. At the forefront of this movement is the movie, I am Nazzy.

I am Nazzy is a film about life, dreams, and hope. Nazzy, a fast-rising music artiste’s picture-perfect life suddenly goes haywire when she accidentally switches places with a doppelganger.

All attempts to prove her identity are futile and she is subjected to a whole new life without the glitz and glamour. Will she lose herself or embark on a journey of self-discovery?

I am Nazzy is brought to you by Film City Studios and Blue Pictures Entertainment. It is the debut movie production for leading actress Chinonso Arubayi and directed by director extraordinaire Kayode Peters.

Among its myriad pleasure points, the flick importantly soars for spotlighting vital conversations on mental health, especially on anxiety and depression. It advocates seeking therapy as the main character unpacks her struggles with a therapist in the movie.

The cast hopes to pull on the heartstrings of Nigerians with this romantic comedy while spreading the important message of appreciating the life you have.

I am Nazzy shows that all that glitters is not gold; it is a story of life, dreams, hope, and self-discovery.

The film parades some of the best actors in the industry including Jidekene Achufusi, Jimmy Odukoya, Denrele Edun, IK Ogbonna, and Ada Jesus among others.

The movie appears fresh as it moves outside the traditional mirror of what a rom-com should look like while simultaneously shedding light on a societal hot topic that isn't talked about enough; mental health.

The cinematography is top-notch and I am excited about the direction in which the Nigerian movie industry is headed.

The costume and wardrobe department also get a thumbs up from me as I was treated to numerous jaw-dropping outfits. A job well done definitely.

I don't mean to be mean, but I'm not sure the actors sincerely understood the tasks before them. Given that some gave their all but it was glaring that a section of the actors either did not understand their parts or plainly just lacked the enthusiasm to go all out.

And with the plethora of talents available in this movie, I really didn't expect them to actually deliver so below par.

The casting choices were good, the talents were superbly identified but they mostly failed to deliver on the level I'd expect of them.

The scriptwriters could have put more zeal into their writing as more than one instance in the movie totally lacked cohesion and real-life feasibility.

Somewhere along the line, I started to cringe whenever a bad line or cliche one came up. It was good, but it could have been better.

All in all, personally I liked the movie, it was fresh, thought-provoking, and in some ways, shows us the dark sides of humans.

I recommend it, that's if you're not a picky person like I am.

Movie Rating: 6/10
