I Played No Role In OAU VC Appointment — Osun Governor Appeals For Calm

I Played No Role In OAU VC Appointment — Osun Governor App

The Osun State Governor, Adegboyega Oyetola has declared that he has no role in determining the choice of the candidate for the position of the Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

This is as it appealed to the indigenes of Ile-Ife, who are protesting the choice of the new Vice Chancellor for the Obafemi Awolowo University, to stop the protests forthwith and give peace a chance.

Making this statement through Ismail Omipidan, his Chief Press Secretary, on Tuesday, Governor Oyetola noted that Ivory Towers anywhere in the world were sacred institutions and everything must be done to accord them that dignity.

While maintaining that he had responsibility for the safety and security of the institution and its workers as the host governor, Oyetola urged the protesting citizens to exercise restraint and allow for peace.

“If we have any reason to believe that these rules are circumvented, there are laid-down procedures to remedy such situations rather than resorting to self-help. We are known for peace in Osun. We must, therefore, not do anything to tarnish that enviable reputation," he appealed.

Meanwhile, the Obafemi Awolowo University management has empathized with its staff and students over the hardship occasioned by the invasion of the institution by indigenes of Ile-Ife.

A statement signed by M. I. Omosule, the University Registrar, disclosed that it was constantly monitoring the situation to do everything possible to bring things under control.

According to the statement, "Management empathizes with staff and students who have been injured or traumatized in this unfortunate state of affairs. Appropriate and relevant authorities, within and outside the University have been duly informed of the development.

"However, the Management has noted the unfortunate and inimical roles of some individuals and wishes to remind everyone of the need to desist from acts that are capable of disrupting the peace of the University.

"We sincerely appreciate the patience and understanding of staff and students, as well as the maturity so far exhibited in the face of this unwarranted assault on the University community.

"Once again, the University management appeals to all staff and students to remain calm, ignore any provocation, and go about their legitimate duties."
