The Governor of Imo State, Hope Uzodinma, has said that he "strongly advocates" the regulation of social media in the country.
Uzodinma expressed his view when he was paid a courtesy visit by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, Thursday in Owerri, the state capital.
Uzodinma's words echo those of many government officials, including the information minister, Lai Mohammed, who said that social media is the bane of the country, as it perpetuates the spread of "fake news".
Uzodinma asserted that social media has been used to "cause trouble in the country".
He said, “I am strongly advocating that social media should be regulated in Nigeria,” he said.
“Opposition party incited hoodlums to cause trouble in Imo because the real protesters went off the street after my address and assurances to them.”
Speaking on the issue, Adamu maintained that police officers "acted professionally during the protest" and were killed even with their guns.

He said, “I can tell you that our men acted professionally during the protest, they had their guns, they were being killed, yet they respected human dignity,” Adamu said.
“I came specifically to visit vandalised property and to see the level of damage done to police facilities in Imo."
Adamu, who has been going around the country to visit affected police station said that his visits are to inspire confidence in the officers who were bruised by the protest.
