Ibadan Poly: Students Protest, Block School Entrance Over Election

Ibadan Poly: Students Protest, Block School Entrance Over El

The Polytechnic Ibadan students have staged a protest at the entrance of the school's main gate.

On Thursday, hundreds of aggrieved students demonstrated against what they perceived as their exclusion from the election of the organisation's Students Union Government (SUG) executives, blocking the institution's main gate.

The institution's SUG leaders were elected online on Wednesday, according to DAILY POST.

It was discovered that the website for the election was only accessible to current students pursuing the Ordinary National Diploma (OND) 2 and Higher National Diploma (HND) 2 degrees.

The OND 1 and HND 1 students were outraged by the exclusion.

On Thursday, the students barricaded the institution's entrance gate, making it difficult for other students, staff members, and outside guests to enter.

The institution's Public Relations Officer (PRO), Alhaji Soladoye Adewole acknowledged that the election took place on Wednesday.

Only current OND 2 and HND 2 students were permitted to vote, he said.

Because certain OND 1 and HND 1 students have not finished the registration process, Soladoye maintained that they are not eligible to vote.

“The election was held online and students were barred from coming to the school to vote. They were supposed to vote from their home using the application.

"As of yesterday, only the OND 2 and HND 2 were allowed to vote because OND 1 and HND 1 have not completed the registration that will allow them to vote.

“The fact is that it is an online thing and the contestants were represented at the collation centre and they were looking at it as the votes were dropping.

"This is the third time we are doing online voting.”
