ICPC Arraigns TASUED Lecturer For Soliciting Sex, Money For

A lecturer at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED),  Dr Balogun Olaniran, has been arraigned before the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on charges of soliciting both sexual favours and financial benefits from a female student of the institution.

 

According to a statement made by Azuka Ogugua, the spokesperson for ICPC on Friday, Olaniran was charged by ICPC for violating Section 8(1) (a) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000, and brought before Hon. Justice Osinuga of the Ijebu-Ode High Court in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The lecturer was arraigned on a one-count charge on Monday, March 27, 2023.

During the court proceedings, the ICPC Counsel explained how, in his capacity as the Head of the Department of Religious Studies at TASUED between October and November 2021, Dr Olaniran demanded sexual favours or a payment of N100,000 from a female student in exchange for altering her academic grades.

The statement read in part:  “within the jurisdiction of this honourable court, corruptly demanded sexual benefit or payment of the sum of N100,000 for himself from (name withheld), a female student, on account of a favour to be afterwards shown her in the discharge of his official duties as a lecturer and Head of Department of Religious Studies at the Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu Ode, to wit, offering to alter her academic grades from fail to pass in courses with codes EDU 311 and EDU 312.”

 

Dr Olaniran Balogun, who held the position of Head of the Department of Religious Studies at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, was suspended by the institution's management.

This was after he was declared wanted by the ICPC for allegedly engaging in corrupt practices and abusing his office on August 28th, 2022.

In a statement dated the same day, the Deputy Registrar for Media and Corporate Relations, Gbenga Omilola, announced that Dr Balogun had been relieved of his position and placed on interdiction until he was able to clear himself of all allegations of misconduct brought against him by the anti-graft agency.
