Dayo Akindolani, an Information Communication Technology (ICT) expert, has called for the inclusion of digital skills in the national school curriculum.
Akindolani in a statement made available to newsmen in Abuja on Thursday noted that digital skills, as well as other potential in the information technology terrain, were not sufficiently explored by the previous governments.
He stated that this is “limiting a huge potential for competitive advantage in becoming a digital talent hub compared to developed countries.”
“A strong emphasis on education and training is crucial for building a talent hub. The government needs to significantly invest in revamping curricula, integrating digital literacy and coding skills into school programs, and supporting universities in developing relevant courses.
"Collaboration with private sector organizations and international partners can provide scholarships, grants, and mentorship programs to nurture talent from an early stage.
“By learning from past initiatives, benchmarking against successful global examples, and leveraging Nigeria’s population and diversity, the government can prioritize key areas to build a robust digital ecosystem,” the statement read.
According to him, by doing this, the government “will not only attract international attention but also stimulate economic growth, create job opportunities, and position Nigeria as a leading player in the global digital economy.
“The government should prioritize expanding internet connectivity, particularly in rural areas, by investing in broadband infrastructure and exploring innovative solutions such as satellite internet.
"Developing data centers, technology parks, and innovation hubs across the country will create a conducive environment for startups and talent development,” he added.
