Idumota Mayhem: RRS Arrests NURTW Leaders Kunle Poly, Tafa Sego

The Lagos State Rapid Response Squad (RRS) has arrested two NURTW members identified as Kunle Poly and Tafa Sego over recent mayhem that rocked Idumota and environs in the Lagos Island area of the state.

The Commander of Rapid Response Squad, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi, arrested the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) leaders on Monday after a meeting held with the Lagos State Government at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Government Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja.

The RRS in a statement on Monday evening revealed that Kunle Poly and Sego are principal suspects in the recurring clashes in Idumota and environs.

RRS in a statement cited on Facebook said; “Lagos Rapid Response Squad (RRS), led by its Commander, CSP Olayinka Egbeyemi this evening arrested the two principal suspects in the constant clashes in Idumota and its environs which has intermittently crippled commercial activities in the area.

“The arrest was effected today at a meeting where the two NURTW members along with some other stakeholders converged.

“The latest clash which occurred last week Thursday reportedly led to the death of a victim while commercial activities were paralyzed in the area for some time until a joint team of police officers were deployed immediately to the area to restore peace.

“Kunle Poly and Sego are presently being transferred to Zone II, Onikan, Lagos."

It will be recalled that heavy crisis rocked factions of the transport union in the Idumota area of Lagos Island on Thursday, January 20, 2022.

The two factions – Eyo boys, reportedly loyal to Kunle Poly, and Kosoko boys – have been at loggerheads over control of territory in Idumota.

It was gathered that Eyo boys expected Kosoko boys collecting levies from commercial bus drivers on Idumota Bridge to make returns but the latter declined.

The growing tension reportedly erupted in a clash around 12:00 pm on Thursday as hoodlums fired gunshots and brandished cutlasses.

One person was said to have been shot dead while another bled to death from machete cuts inflicted on him.

The violence forced traders in markets around the area to abruptly shut down their shops.

However, normalcy was restored to the area on Friday as policemen and soldiers were stationed in strategic points around the scene but commercial activities had yet to fully return.
