Ilesa Varsity Bill Passes Second Reading In Osun Assembly

A bill seeking to establish the University of Ilesa, Osun State, has scaled through the second reading.

The motion for the Bill, titled, 'University of Ilesa Establishment Bill, 2022' was moved by Maruf Olanrewaju, the House Majority Leader and seconded by Babatunde Ibirogba, Chairman, House Committee on Education during a plenary on Tuesday.

The House Speaker, Timothy Owoeye, the sponsor of the Bill, stated that the upgrade of the College of Education, Ilesa to University of Ilesa will not add additional burden to the State Government, but would rather foster economic development of the State.

The Speaker commended the lawmakers for their efforts towards making the Bill acceptable beyond political affiliations.

The lawmakers who remarked the importance of the bill noted that when passed into law, it would provide a framework for the regulation of powers and duties of the university authority.

Wale Adedoyin, Ilesa West, Babatunde Ibirogba, Egbedore, Kunle Akande, Olorunda, Adekunle Oyekunle, Ejigbo and Adewumi Adeyemi, Obokun state constituencies, while describing the College of Education, Ilesa, as one of the oldest institutions of higher education in the State, called for accelerated passage of the bill.

They added that the university would go a long way in providing more jobs for the unemployed and boost the Internally Generated Revenue of the state.

The house later dissolved to the committee of the whole for further consideration of the bill.
