Ilorin Hijab Controversy: Schools To Remain Shut Pending Government Decision

Ilorin Hijab Controversy: Schools To Remain Shut Pending Gov

The 10 schools affected by the Hijab controversy in Ilorin are to remain shut, pending the outcome of the State Government's consultation with stakeholders on the use of the Muslim headgear in schools.

According to a statement made available to the press in Ilorin on Monday, this is to avert any breakdown of law and order, while the government concludes on consultations with relevant stakeholders.

In a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Mamman Jibril urged members of the public to remain calm and peaceful.

“Official pronouncement of government’s position is likely this week.

“The government urges parents, officials, and authorities at the affected schools to maintain peace and avoid making comments or doing anything that could cause further misunderstanding and heat up the polity,” the government advised.

The statement was issued following the order by the Kwara State government, on Friday for the immediate closure of ten grant-aided schools in the state capital after a hijab controversy triggered a face-off between Muslims and Christians.

The schools affected, are Taiwo Isale and James Secondary School, Maraba; C&S College, Offa Road; ECWA School, Oja Iya; Surulere Baptist School, Bishop Smith Secondary School, Agba Dam; St Barnabas Secondary School, Sabo Oke; St Anthony College, Sabo Oke; St John School, Maraba; St Williams Secondary School.
