Imo indigenes accuse leaders of complacency amid insecurity

Indigenes of Orsu-Obodo in Oguta LGA of Imo state have accused leaders of the community of being complacent over the increasing security situation in the area.

Some indigenes of the community who spoke to newsmen on Tuesday, said the leaders' complacent attitude towards addressing the security situation has further increased it.

It would be recalled that several persons have tragically lost their lives in the wake of the insecurity both in Orsu-Obodo and neighbouring communities.

An indigene of the community who spoke on the condition of anonymity said over twelve youths of the community have lost their lives in several attacked by gunmen.

He listed their names as Chijiekwu Ochije (aka Ajagala), Okike Chukwudi (Moral), Uche Oshimiri, Chibuike Akuegbuonwu, Shagi Onwunibe, Ogechi Nwabueze (Barry), Ugochi Nwabueze (Radical), Chima Ogbonna (Pastor), Kelechi Eneberi, Jeremiah Nwanshinne, Maduagwu and Natu Nwabueze.

He said that the bereaved families are soliciting for help and intervention from the government.

Hear him, "these are able-bodied youths of Orsu-Obodo who were killed as a result of insecurity. The families of these victims are in grief and are calling for vengeance.

"The insecurity in our land is unprecedented. We have lost both human and material resources as a result of this ugly trend. Unfortunately, the security agents are doing little or nothing to salvage the situation.

"If the ugly trend is not nipped on the bud as a matter of it, the community, I bet, may turn to a place of dog-eat-dog. We are saying no to more killing of the youths.

"Regrettably, our so-called leaders are too damn complacent about the situation. This is because most of them go around with heavy security agents and do not care if the unarmed civilians are protected or not. Government has to do something fast."

Asked the group suspected to be responsible for the extra-judicial killings, he said the killers were ywt to be ascertained but merely labeled 'Unknown Gunmen.'
