Imo: Kidnappers of pregnant woman, son arrested by police

A pregnant mother, simply known as Mrs Obi and her four-year-old boy escaped from kidnappers in Eziama Ubulu, Oru-West Local Government Area, Imo State and their abductors were arrested.

According to the Guardian, the victims and their brother-in-law, Obi Fredrick, were abducted on April 6, 2024, at their family home in Okija, Anambra State.

The suspects allegedly responsible for their ordeal were paraded, according to Imo State Police Command spokesman, ASP Henry Okoye, after diligently gathering actionable intelligence and a swift crackdown by operatives of the Command's Anti-Kidnapping Unit, led by CSP Oladimeji Odeyeyiwa.

He revealed that the operatives, using technical intelligence, assaulted the suspects' hideaway at Mgbidi and apprehended one Obi Chidera Collins, a relative of the victims who allegedly masterminded the kidnapping.

According to Okoye, the suspect's admissions resulted in the discovery of another criminal hideaway on May 18, 2024, in Mgbidi, when five more individuals were apprehended.

Pump-action weapons, three locally built shotguns, 35 rounds of live bullets, a Lexus RX 330 Jeep, fetish items, and other incriminating materials were seized from the accused.

Okoye also stated, “The suspects are currently undergoing investigation and will be arraigned in court with the appropriate criminal charges upon completion of the investigation.”

“This operational feat among many others underscores the Command’s unflinching dedication to crime fighting. The Command urges residents of Imo State to continue to support the police and other security agencies with useful information that will assist them in effectively discharging their constitutional mandate of safeguarding the state,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Imo State Police Command has distanced itself from the confessional admissions made by three suspects detained in connection with the alleged kidnapping and assassination of retired Major General Richard Duru.

Allnews.ng had reported that Major General Duru was abducted on September 27, 2023, near Bishops Court, Area 7 Orji/Uratta Owerri, and his black Mercedes Benz G.L. 450 automobile with registration number LND 826 NG was taken by a suspected kidnapping gang.

In a communiqué issued by the Command's spokesperson, ASP Henry Okoye, the suspects' claims were refuted, stating that the Army chief is still alive and that attempts are underway to rescue the victim and apprehend the abductors.

He also revealed that a special team established by the Police Commissioner, CP Aboki Danjuma, over the event is currently conducting an investigation and has achieved "tremendous progress based on the confessional statements of the three suspects and technical intelligence."
