Inauguration Day: Joe Biden Sworn In As 46th President

...Kamala Takes Oath Of Office

Joe Biden has been sworn in as the 46th president of the United States. He takes oath of office amid pandemic, economic woes and deep divisions.

Biden was sworn in by supreme court chief justice John Roberts, alongside his wife, Dr. Jill Biden. They held the Bible as the new leader took oath.

In the same vein, Kamala Harris has been sworn in as the nation's first female vice president.

AllNews Nigeria understands that Kamala is also the first black person and the first person of South Asian descent elected to the vice presidency and becomes the highest-ranking woman ever to serve in government.

Kamala was sworn in Wednesday by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, the first Latina to serve on the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Joe Biden said the nation “must confront” white supremacy, possibly becoming the first president to utter that phrase in an inaugural address.

“The dream of justice for all will be deferred no longer,” the president said.

Biden also called on the nation to unify after four years of Donald Trump’s divisive presidency.

“This is our historic moment of crisis and challenge, and unity is the path forward,” the president said.

Vice President Mike Pence, standing in for President Donald Trump, was sitting nearby as Lady Gaga sang the national anthem accompanied by the U.S. Marine Corps band.
