INEC Still Uploading Election Results After Announcing Winner

INEC Still Uploading Election Results After Announcing Winne

The 2023 Presidential and National Assembly elections were held all over Nigeria amid controversies never before witnessed in Nigeria's election history. The controversies trailing the elections directly or indirectly frustrated INEC's plans to upload the results of the elections immediately as stipulated by law.

However, despite INEC's inability to upload 100% of the results as per statutory provisions, it went ahead to announce the winner as Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, in the wee hours of Wednesday, March 1, 2023.

This and other aspects of INEC's handling of the elections are still raising dust.

So far, the Independent National Electoral Commission has uploaded 155,472 results from 176, 846 polling units, six days after the presidential poll and two days after announcing the winner.

The figure represents 88 per cent of results from all the polling units. At the time of compiling this report, the electronic transmission of results was still ongoing.

This is another glaring aberration as Nigerians expected that the election results would be uploaded on Election Day as promised by the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu.

However, INEC came under fire for its failure to upload results to its viewing portal which led to the walkout of some party agents on Monday at the National Collation Centre in Abuja.

Checks have also confirmed that the results of all the polling units were yet to be uploaded on INEC’s website.

According to the Commission, Bola Tinubu, the candidate for the ruling All Progressives Congress, won 8.8 million votes, while main opposition candidates Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi had 6.9 million and 6.1 million votes, respectively.
