INEC To Make NIN Compulsory For Voter Registration

INEC To Make NIN Compulsory For Voter Registration

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has revealed plans to make National Identification Number (NIN) a precondition for voters registration exercise, which will commence in a few weeks.

According to the electoral commission, the NIN would help tackle challenges of underage voting, alien voting and other challenges associated with registration.

One of the National Commissioner of INEC made this known on Tuesday in an interview with the Punch, adding that the final decision would soon be reached and officially announced to the public.

The commissioner who described NIN as "ideal" explained that the permanent voter card was only supposed to be in use for a maximum of 10 years, adding that most countries rely on a national database and not the Permanent Voter Card for voting.

He said, “The NIN is the ideal. When we want to begin the continuous voter registration, we may consider it because ordinarily, a national identity card is what should be used for voting.

"When the PVC was introduced, it was meant to be in use for 10 years and the assumption was that within those 10 years, the national identity card would be in use by a majority of Nigerians.

“I can tell you that the NIN will be one of the preconditions for registration when the CVR starts. We are trying to harmonise all databases.”

Minister of communication and digital economy, Isa Pantami, had earlier argued the NIN enrollment and linkage with SIM card will help in tackling crimes and fishing out criminals and fraudsters.

Meanwhile, the federal government issued a fresh directive announcing the lift of suspension on replacement and activation of old Subscriber Identification Module (SIM) card.

The directive was given on Thursday, December 31, in a statement by the director of public affairs of the National Communication Commission (NCC) Ikechukwu Adinde. The NCC, however, gave a condition that the person must have enrolled and obtained the NIN.
