The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has stated that the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise will be suspended on May 30, 2022.
INEC chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu disclosed this on Wednesday at the second quarterly consultative meeting with the Civil Society Organisations in Abuja.
Yakubu said the decision is to enable the Commission to clean up the registration data, print permanent voters' cards, and do other activities ahead of the 2023 General Election.
The chairman added that the commission had reviewed the capability of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System ( BVAS) and the dissatisfaction received after the recent FCT Area Council Election had been taken into consideration.
Prof. Yakubu assured the Commission's readiness for the forthcoming Ekiti and Osun states governorship elections.
Speaking on behalf of the Civil Society Organisations, the Convener of Situation Room, Ene Obi decried the high level of voter apathy in the country, calling for progression in tackling the menace.
She urged INEC to commence civic education in both Osun and Ekiti States ahead of the governorship elections, stressing the need for transparency and accountability to be applied in the nation’s electoral process.
