INEC's De-Registration Of 22 Political Parties Upheld By Supreme Court

INEC's De-Registration Of 22 Political Parties Upheld By Sup

The Supreme Court has upheld the de-registration of 22 political parties by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The judgment was passed on Friday, March 25 following the scrapping of the parties in 2020 by INEC as a result of their dismal performances in previous elections.

The landmark judgment was passed by Justice Ejembi Eko who voided and set aside a judgment of the Court of Appeal which nullified the de-registration.

According to Eko, the Court of Appeal on its own raised the issue of lack of fair hearing in favour of the scrapped parties. He arrived at the conclusion without hearing from the other parties.

"This appeal by INEC is meritorious and is hereby allowed. The decision of the court below is set aside", the ruling stated.
