Injuries, inconsistency behind Chelsea's difficult season — Pochettino

Injuries, inconsistency behind Chelsea's difficult season

Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino spoke on Wednesday to the media in his news conference ahead of the rescheduled Premier League tie against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday and said that a combination of factors like injuries to players and inconsistencies due to a new project has severely affected their season.

Chelsea drew 2-2 with Aston Villa in their last league game and suffered a humiliating 5-0 loss to Arsenal in the penultimate game at the Emirates Stadium.

"We all feel the responsibility. Of course, we can do better, but there are too many circumstances that happen, that is why it is difficult to explain in one word or sentence.

"We are working on trying to improve, we have amazing staff in medical and performance and coaching, with amazing experience being in this business. Too many circumstances arrive at some periods and it can happen.

"We need to be at the end of the season with all the information on the table and be better and improve the communication, dynamics, strategies, put all our knowledge in to improve what we can improve.

"The quality is here but sometimes it happens with a team. Why doesn't that team perform? Yes, we know why, we are assessing why, but the inconsistency of a new project can sometimes [be it] but I don’t say it is that. There are too many things that are all together today and why we are suffering so many injuries."

Pochettino on how pleased he was with the fightback to draw 2-2 at Aston Villa in their last game said: "Yes, so pleased because it is about learning, a process they need to learn.

"We need to get the experience and learn from the experience. It is a massive challenge, having these young players competing in the most tough league in the world."

On if it shows how quickly players can adapt: "Yes. With ups and downs, but yes. They are learning and it is a process that takes time. We need to help and force them to realise areas they need to improve and areas they need to be better.

"[It is a] different project, we were talking before about different projects and when you have more young players you need more time to spend and more time for them to learn."

Finally, at his news conference, Pochettino spoke on why his players are getting so many injuries: "I need to be honest. What I can say in all the new processes there are things we can do better, of course."
