Insecurity: Defend yourselves – Governor Radda to Katsina

Katsina State Governor Dikko Radda has urged locals to take self-defence measures in response to recurring bandit assaults.

During an intensive emergency security conference conducted at Katsina's Government House on Friday, the governor emphasised the necessity of community involvement in conjunction with government efforts to address instability.

Governor Radda emphasised the necessity for proactive community engagement, encouraging locals to create groups committed to their protection, implying a change towards more self-reliant security measures

The meeting, which aimed to address the state's rising security concerns, was attended by significant figures such as Katsina and Daura emirs, Dr Abdulmumini Kabir Usman and Dr Umar Farouq Umar, business leaders, and state security authorities.

He said, “We must review the security situation in the state, take action to find a solution and address these challenges. Apart from insecurity, there are other challenges like the rising cost of food and hunger amongst the population.

“Government is fully prepared to assist any community that organises themselves in their respective areas through training and the provision of logistics.

“We are all aware of the current skyrocketing of the prices of foodstuff, which led to protests in Niger State, Kano and other places. It has not gotten to our state yet, but it is necessary for us to meet and see how we can mitigate the situation before it gets out of hand.”

He stated that the rise in commodity prices was caused by the collapse in the value of the naira and that some surrounding countries are coming with small sums of money to buy large amounts of food.

He added, “There are also people who use their naira to purchase foodstuff for hoarding to save their money from possible loss due to the fall in the value of our currency.”
