The Republic of Niger President, Mohammed Bazoum has conferred on the Governor of Borno State, Babagana Umara Zulum, a prestigious award.

The award, "de Grand Officer dans I`Ordre" for his role in the fight against security challenges, is equivalent to the Nigeria's Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).

The award ceremony was held in Zinder, the third largest city in Niger, as part of Niger's Independence Day celebrations on Tuesday.

President Bazoum said the award was to show respect for Zulum's tireless efforts in the fight against Boko Haram, in addition to his concern for refugees and efforts to resettle them in war-torn areas.

This is the first time a Nigerien president has given such an award to a Nigerian governor.

Those present at the award ceremony include Senator Kashim Shettima, Member of Parliament Mohammed Ali Ndume, Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Mohammed Tahir Monguno and other commissioners.
