The Palestinian Ambassador to Nigeria, Abdullah Abu Shawesh has charged the international community on actions towards ending the inhumane treatment of severe physical and mental torture of Palestinians as this has created health problems for several detainees.

Shawesh who made the call on Monday in a statement made available to AllNews.ng, decried the inadequate and scarce food provision of detainees which has resulted in severe weight loss and deteriorating health situations.

He noted that, there have been a lack of water, hygiene, and clothing, exposing prisoners to many skin diseases.

Shawesh further noted that, for over seven consecutive months, Palestinian detainees have been suffering catastrophic measures and unbearable conditions in Israeli prisons and detention centers. They are cramped in very narrow cells, each containing 10 to 15 prisoners, and are exposed daily to torture, ill-treatment, and medical negligence.

"This is rooted in the fact that the occupation army practices brutal and heinous violations during arrest operations, which are accompanied by severe beatings, widespread vandalism and destruction of prisoner's homes, as well as threats and insults to their families.

"The total number of detainees in the last seven months reached 8,725. This does not include detainees from Gaza who are subject to enforced disappearances."

The Ambassador further noted that, the head of the Prisoners' Affairs Commission, Qaddoura Fares called on the World Health Organization to put pressure on the Israeli authorities to allow visiting the Palestinian prisoners.

Stating, "This silence is illogical, as the world is watching these crimes committed in public, as the number of martyrs has increased significantly and sick detainees have no medication, which will lead to truly catastrophic consequences at any moment and the martyrdom of sick detainees."

"It is also worth noting that 18 Palestinians were martyred in Israeli prisons during the past seven months due to torture, medical crimes, and starvation policies and other Israel's practices that are in contradiction to the international law.

"We call on the international community to immediately act to put an end to the unjust situation and suffering of Palestinian prisoners."
