INTERVIEW: Why Many Are Hiding Behind Gospel Music - Sola Allyson

INTERVIEW: Why Many Are Hiding Behind Gospel Music - Sola Al

Since breaking into the music scene with her evergreen hit album, “Eji Owuro” popular singer Sola Allyson has been a force to reckon with in the industry, with her unique voice and lyrical rendition. Allyson, whose genre of songs ranges from folk, soul and gospel has graced several religious gatherings. She began her career as a back-up singer in late 1980s and up till date, she remains one of the most celebrated gospel artistes with her sonorous voice.

Apart from being a singer with recognitions both in Nigeria and abroad, she is a song-writer and voice coach, who has through her music spread the gospel.

In a brief chat with AllNews, Allyson, who recently released her 8th studio album “Iri”, opens up on the current state of the music industry, the secret behind well accepted “Eji Owuro” and her signature Boubou outfit.

What is your favourite part about this line of work and ever had any flop before or during a music performance?

My line of work is my destiny which I have come into full acceptance of. Having been chosen as a tool of joy and hope to my world gladdens my heart and gives me confidence in my journey. As with anything one does in life, there has to be down sides which I as a person do not focus on.

“Eji Owuro” is still a master-class after all these years, what's the secret?

When you express yourself the original way and model by which your inspiration is received, it sticks onto the souls of others and never gets old.

As a gospel singer, there is a certain expectation from fans, what do you have to say to this?

As anyone who does what many people like, there'll be expectations. But I've come to the understanding that even those who have expectations of you are not even sure of the expectations they have of life. So, why should you yield to expectations of people? I always seek and live my life to be in the expectations of the laws of The Owner of all of us, which is the expectation all of us should endeavor to meet.

What has changed about it since you came into limelight? Any negative aspect? What do you think can be done to correct that?

Always evolving. Getting better. Although many are hiding behind being called "gospel musician" because of the tight competition in the mainstream, in my own opinion. There are songs you listen to which just carry the appellation of gospel but no substance of the gospel. But, it will keep getting better as knowledge of GOD and the essence of Christ opens up the more.

You seem to love same style of dress for your live performances, which is Bubu, what influenced your choice?

My style is modest, elegant, classy and comfortable boubou or not.
