IPOB: Nnamdi Kanu Should Account For His Wrongs Says Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari insists the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, should account for what he has been doing.

AllNews Nigeria reports that the Nnamdi Kanu who was re-arrested in June 2021 is currently in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), Abuja for treasonable charges preferred against him by the Buhari-led federal government.

Recall that some Igbo leaders led by the Minister of Aviation in the First Republic, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi had met with President Buhari to request for the unconditional release of Kanu.

In his response, Buhari said it is a heavy decision to take but it will be considered.

Meanwhile, speaking during an interview aired on Channels Television on Wednesday night Buhari was asked if he would release Nnamdi Kanu, he responded by saying he would not interfere with the Judiciary.

“There is one institution that I wouldn’t interfere with, that is the judiciary. Nnamdi Kanu’s case is with the judiciary but what I wonder is when Kanu was safely in Europe, abusing this administration and mentioning too many things, I thought he wants to come and defend himself on the accusations.

“So, we are giving him an opportunity to defend himself in our system, not to be abusing us from Europe as if he was not a Nigerian.

"Let him come here with us and then criticize us here. Nigerians know that I don’t interfere with the judiciary, let him be listened to.

"But those who are saying that he should be released, no, we cannot release him.”

When asked about the possibility of a political solution, Mr. President said, “There is a possibility of a political solution. If people behave themselves, all well and good but you can’t go to a foreign country and keep on sending incorrect economic and security problems (sic) against our country and thinking that you would not account for what you have been doing. Let him account for what he has been doing.”

Nnamdi Kanu who was whisked to Nigeria from Kenya sometime in June 2021 is still in detention awaiting trial scheduled to continue January 18, 2022.
