Iran Protest: 7,000 People Arrested - UN

The United Nations, UN, has demanded an immediate release of the 7,000 people arrested in the Iranian protest.

The human rights department of the organization says that it received "verified video footage" that showed security agencies shooting into the crowd of protesters with the intent to kill.

“There are also reports, which the UN Human Rights Office has so far been unable to verify, suggesting more than twice that number killed,” UN statement.

Michelle Bachelet, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said that the received video showed “severe violence was used against protesters.”

“We have also received footage which appears to show security forces shooting unarmed demonstrators from behind while they were running away, and shooting others directly in the face and vital organs – in other words shooting to kill,” she said.

“I urge the authorities to immediately release from detention all protesters who have been arbitrarily deprived of their liberty,”

The Iranian protests began on the 15th of November after the government hiked the price of fuel.

The Iranian government is yet to give an estimate of the number of victims arrested or killed by the police in a bid to curb the agitation.

The protest is blamed not on the newly introduced fuel prices, but on the country's "thugs", with the backing of countries like the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Israel, also rejecting the number of death toll released by foreign bodies, referring to them as "utter lies".
