Iran Tasks UN On Action Against U.S. Over Killing Of Top Qassem Soleimani

Iran has tasked the United Nations to take formal action against United States for the killing of its top general, Qassem Soleimani, who was assassinated two years ago, on January 3, 2020.

Qassem Soleimani, was the former commander of the elite Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). He was killed when missiles fired from a U.S. drone destroyed his convoy in Iraq’s capital Baghdad, when on a diplomatic mission.

In the attack, Iraqi commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis and several others were also killed.

The request came at a time Iranian officials are planning to mark the second anniversary of Soleimani’s killing on January 3.

The legal department of Iran’s presidential office in a letter sent to the UN on Saturday stated that “With all legal initiatives in its power, including issuing a resolution to condemn the U.S. government and discourage similar moves in the future."

"The U.S. governments have for years displayed an excessive unilateralism in their actions that has granted them the power to violate international laws and agreements."

The killing of Qassem Soleimani was ordered by former President Donald Trump, after he said that "Soleimani was the world’s top terrorist and should have been terminated long ago”.

The killing of Soleimani brought Iran and the U.S. to war, as the IRGC launched 12 missiles at two U.S. bases in Iraq on January 8, 2020.
