Retired General Mamoun Abu Nowar, formerly of the Jordanian air force, shares insights into the situation in Rafah, Gaza. Mamoun Abu Nowar, tells Al Jazeera that Hamas’s forces in Rafah are quite formidable and that the war is an endless one.

“This is an endless war, and Hamas will still be there, and the Israelis will not win it,” he said.

According to Nowar, Hamas's presence in the southern part of Gaza is formidable, with strategic tunnels extending up to 60 meters deep and tactical tunnels ranging from 20 to 43 meters.

“The southern part of Gaza is one of [Hamas’s] command posts, as they call them,” he said. “There are strategic tunnels, they go deep, like 60 metres or so, and the tactical tunnels, which are like 20, 43 metres”.

Controlling these tunnels presents a significant challenge, requiring extensive effort to disrupt Hamas's command posts effectively.

“In order to control these tunnels,” he continued, “they have to work very hard, to cut these command posts or destroy them so [Hamas] loses this command as a whole, but this would be a very very difficult fight, it would take months”.

Nowar suggests that Israel's plan involves displacing Palestinians in Rafah, coercing them to relocate towards the coast, before launching attacks.

However, he warns of the disastrous consequences for the civilian population in Rafah, condemning Israel's potential actions as genocidal.

He emphasizes the futility of such tactics, asserting that they will not lead to the elimination of Hamas and will perpetuate the cycle of conflict indefinitely.
