It's Time For Nigeria To Give Sterling Attention To Other Sports!

It's Time For Nigeria To Give Sterling Attention To Other Sp

Football of course is the world's most popular sport. But in recent years, this game has not really brought colossal glory to Africa's most populous nation - Nigeria.

In 2018, D'Tigress made history at the FIBA Women's World Cup where they became the first-ever African country to win a group-stage game with a win over Latvia. Around September 2019, they defeated Senegal - the host nation - to retain their Afrobasket crown - a fourth African title for the amazons.

To cap a fine ascension in this era, the ladies will be at the next Olympics!

Another sport that is bringing honour to Nigeria is wrestling.

Nigerian wrestlers have dominated the continent and are doing the country so proud on the globe.

Two-time Commonwealth champion, Odunayo Adekuoroye is currently ranked no.1 in her weight class in the world.

In racket sports, Aruna Quadri is doing wonderfully well, putting Nigeria's name on the map.

Long-term Nigeria squash queen, Yemisi Olatunji has won multiple Professional Squash Association (PSA) titles, yet she still cry for sponsorship.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have just two African titles in twenty-five years and have never made it past the round of 16 at the FIFA senior world cup, yet they get spoilt with dollars anytime they are competing.

Talents abound in Nigeria. Not just in soccer. It's high time the man at the helm of Nigeria sports, Honourable minister Sunday Dare gave the deserved attention to other sports.

It is heart-warming to know that he concurs that other sports should be given real support too.

Speaking in an address to ministry staffers at the Ministry Office shortly after receiving his portfolio at the State House in Abuja in August 2019, Dare said: “Beyond soccer, we have other sports. But at the heart of that work is also youths development, beyond sports. So, we will be thinking outside the box."

Hopefully, the minister takes true to his words!
