Italian court jails family for killing Pakistani woman

In a landmark case, an Italian court in Reggio Emilia has convicted the parents and uncle of 18-year-old Pakistani woman, Saman Abbas for murder.

Abbas was killed after refusing her family's demands to marry a cousin in Pakistan. Her body was discovered in November 2022, buried near her father's workplace in northern Italy, a year and a half after she was last seen alive.

An autopsy revealed the young woman had a broken neck bone, possibly caused by strangulation.

Saman Abbas' parents, Shabbar Abbas and Nazia Shaheen, were sentenced to life in prison for their roles in the murder. The uncle, Danish Hasnain, received a 14-year prison term.

Abbas had emigrated from Pakistan to Italy and quickly adopted Western ways, including dating a man of her choice and discarding her headscarf.

The court heard that Abbas had expressed fear for her life to her boyfriend due to her refusal to marry an older man in Pakistan.
