Iwuanyanwu decries nonchalant attitude of Igbos towards own

By Ifeanyi Iheakanwa

An Elderstatesman of Imo state origin, Chief Emmanuel Chukwuemeka Iwuanyanwu, has expressed regrets over the nonchalant attitude of Igbos in the use of Igbo language.

He said that Igbo indigenous language, due to its neglect, has gradually been relegated to the background because Igbo indigenes now prefer to speak English language even at traditional gatherings, a situation he described as unhealthy to the growth of the race.

The political heavyweight who is the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo Worldwide, while speaking at the 2024 United Nations International Mother Tongue Day held at Imo state Council for Arts and Culture Complex Mbari, Owerri, the state capital, described Ndigbo as very resourceful people who are at the length and breath of the world, insisting that it was the indigenous language that profoundly brought the identity of the people that most of them were able to attain great heights in life.

He urged the traditional rulers, school proprietors and institutions of higher learning in Igboland to institutionalize and make the language a compulsory subject for students. This way, he said, the language would be widely spoken as it was in the past.

"I can hardly know what caused the neglect. Igbo language was more like a lingual Franca that was spoken in many countries of the world because our people are scattered around the globe.

"It's amazing how the younger generation relegated the language to the background. They have forgotten so soon that it is our identity."

He said that God blessed Igbo people with enough natural resources including limestone, crude oil, ceramics, coal, salt and others, regretting that Southeast zone is marginalized in the country.
