Japan is on track to approve the use of remdesivir, an antiviral drug, for the treatment of coronavirus patients, government of Japan reveals.
The approval will make Japan the second country, after the United States, to approve the use of the drug in the treatment of COVID-19 patients.
A spokesman for the government, Yoshihide Suga, said, “If there is no problem we hope to swiftly approve (the drug) today.”
Japan's Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, said that the country was ready to give a go-ahead on the use of the experimental antiviral drug which was developed in the United States by Gilead Sciences.

The United States gave a green light on the use of the drug, which was initially created for the treatment of Ebola, after there were improvements in the health of a third of COVID-19 patients in the country.
The drug had been available to patients who applied for clinical trials across the world.
