Jerry Rawlings Death: Family Reveal How Jerry John Rawlings

The family of late Jerry Rawlings, a former Ghanaian president, has made a clarification on the cause of Rawlings's death.

AllNews earlier reported that 73-year-old Rawlings was confirmed dead on Thursday morning, at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra, Ghana's capital.

Some people had said that the former president died of COVID-19.

Contrary to reports, the family in a statement signed by Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, said Rawlings died after a brief illness.

The statement read: “It is with deep sadness that the family of His Excellency Jerry John Rawlings (Rtd), informs the general public that the former President of the Republic died on Thursday morning after a short illness.

“We request privacy at this difficult moment. Details of funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.”

Meanwhile, the Ghanaian Government has declared seven days of mourning in honor of the deceased.

Before his death, Rawlings was president from 1981 to 2001, although, serving as a military ruler until 1992 before he was democratically elected.

Born on June 22, 1947, Rawlings' failed coup was orchestrated in 179 weeks before Ghana was to observe a return to civilian rule.

Although his coup plot had failed, leading to him sentenced to death by court-martial; in 1981, he regained country as head of the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC).

Transitioning into democratic rule, Rawlings resigned from the military and formed the National Democratic Congress (NDC), winning the election and leading the Fourth Ghanaian Republic.

He served another term in office and installed John Atta Mills, his vice, as president, although Mills served briefly in office.
