Jigawa Government Warns Council Members Against Impeachment

The Jigawa State government has warned legislative council members of Ringim Local Government Area of the State over impeachment of its Chairman, Shehu Sule Udi.

The government said the members of the legislative council of the LGA were overstepping their boundaries.

This was contained in a statement signed and issued by the state's Commissioner for Special Duties, Auwal D Sankara on Monday.

According to Sankara, the members must be mindful of the law and avoid the consequences of their actions.

"Our attention has been drawn to the unconstitutional conduct of members of the legislative council of Ringim local government for overstepping their boundaries as stated in the 2012 local government law as amended.

"We intend to make it clear that Section 9 of the principal Law of the local government council law cap L8 laws of Jigawa state 2012 provides for the Tenure of Chairmen of local government councils as amended, stated accordingly;

"That- “Where a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Supervisory Councillor or Councillor is involved in any Criminal act or in an act of misconduct, he shall be suspended and where he is found guilty of the offence or of the misconduct he may be removed by the Governor subject to approval of a simple majority of the House of Assembly.

“Where a Chairman, Vice Chairman, Supervisory Councillor or Councillor is involved in any Criminal act or in an act of misconduct he may be suspended by the House of Assembly and where he is found guilty of the offense by a Court of Law or of the misconduct by a Committee of the House of Assembly he may be removed from office by a simple majority of the members of the House of Assembly.

"We want to caution the members of the legislative council of Ringim local government to be mindful of the above law and avoid the repercussions this action may cause to their positions and status in the government process."
