Legendary football commentator John Motson has passed away.
Motson who was born in 1945 died at the age of 77.
News of his demise was disclosed in a statement released by his family on Thursday.
“It is with great sadness that we announce that John Motson OBE died peacefully in his sleep today,” the statement reads.
This was followed by an announcement on the BBC Sport website.
"Legendary commentator John Motson, who had an illustrious 50-year career with the BBC, has died aged 77", it said.
Rest in peace, John Motson.

The legendary commentator, who had an illustrious 50-year career with the BBC, has died aged 77.
Motson covered 10 World Cups, 10 European Championships and 29 FA Cup finals for BBC Sport before retiring from broadcasting in 2018.
He is survived by his wife Anne and son Frederick.
