Just Fontaine: World Cup Record Goalscorer Dies

French football great Just Fontaine has died at the age of 89.

Stade de Reims, his former club, announced his death on Wednesday.

Fontaine scored a record 13 goals for France at the 1958 World Cup finals in Sweden, eclipsing the record of 11 goals scored by Hungary striker Sndor Kocsis at the 1954 tournament.

The prolific forward is joint-fourth on the all-time World Cup goalscorers list alongside Argentina's Lionel Messi.

He scored 30 goals in just 31 appearances for France between 1953 and 1960.

On the club side, the French great scored 145 goals in 152 appearances for Reims, winning three Ligue 1 titles and reaching the 1959 European Cup final, where Reims lost to a Real Madrid side containing Alfredo di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas.

His career was dramatically cut short at the age of just 28 in 1962 after suffering a double leg fracture.
