JUST IN: Bandits attack, kill deputy vice chancellor at Nige

The deputy vice chancellor for research, innovation, and development at Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto, Prof. Yusuf Saidu, has been killed by bandits.

In a brief statement posted on Facebook on Monday, the institution announced Saidu's passing.

The statement revealed that while travelling from Sokoto State to Kaduna, militants assaulted and killed the deceased.

The statement read, “The death has occurred of Prof. Yusuf Saidu, the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research Innovation and Development Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto.

“He was attacked and killed by bandits on his way to Kaduna from Sokoto State.

“A man of integrity, religion, dedication and courage. May Allah accept his soul and forgive his sin but this is a painful loss to all members of the University community and the Academia at large.”

Despite several military operations and significant funding allocated to combat the threat, the northern area has remained the hub of banditry in recent years.

Yesterday, Allnews.ng reported that the community of Maidabino in Danmusa Local Government Area, Katsina State was attacked by a large number of bandits, during a terrifying nighttime ordeal.

Nine people tragically lost their lives in the horrific attack, which took place between 10 PM on Saturday and about 2:30 AM on Sunday. Fifty occupants, mostly women and children, were taken hostage.

According to a local who spoke to Daily Trust on condition of anonymity out of fear for their safety, the assailants were so many that they were able to operate with complete impunity and overpower local security.

In the course of the bandits' rampage, almost ten residences, fifteen stores, and nine cars were set on fire.

The Source said, “What happened was that some traders who were returning from Yantumaki market on Friday, about 30 vehicles, who were going in a convoy with a military escort, had to return and pass the night in Danmusa because they could not proceed to Maidabino as they encountered bandits along the way.”

“In the encounter, some bandits were killed by the military escort. Unfortunately, the bandits mobilized a large number from Zamfara and other places, to the extent that the soldiers that are in Maidabino could not avert the attack,” another source confirming the attack said.

The police spokesman in Katsina, ASP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, acknowledged the occurrence to members of the press and stated the investigation was underway, with additional developments to be announced in due course.
