JUST-IN: Court Sacks 20 Cross River Lawmakers For Defecting

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sacked 18 members of the Cross River State House of Assembly and two members of the House of Representatives on Monday.

The court sacked the Imo lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In a judgement delivered by Justice Taiwo Taiwo, the lawmakers must vacate their seats after abandoning the party that brought them to power.

The PDP had filed a suit challenging their defection as marked in suit FHC/ABJ/CS/975/2021.

The court also sacked two members of the House of Representatives from the state making the total number of sacked lawmakers 20.

However, speaker of the Cross River state House of Assembly, retired Honourable Eteng Jonah Williams has said neither he nor others were aware of the development.

He added that they have not been served a notice of vacation from office.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, Venatius Ikem Esq has said he is satisfied by the court ruling, adding that preparation will be on top gear to replace the sacked lawmakers.
