Protesters gathered outside the Peoples Democratic Party's (PDP) national offices in Abuja on Wednesday to voice their unwavering support for the party's Acting National Chairman, Umar Damagun, and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike.

The incident occurred at a critical juncture, just hours before the PDP governor's forum meeting and a day before the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting when important leadership talks are expected.

Armed with signs displaying slogans supporting both leaders, the protestors expressed alarm over internal divides within the PDP, accusing certain party members of fomenting strife among the leadership.

This public display of solidarity highlights the party's profound splits and continuing power struggles.

The instability within the PDP comes after recent turbulence, including requests from certain party members for the resignation of the National Working Committee (NWC) owing to perceived leadership shortcomings.

Despite these issues, the NWC released a statement through National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba expressing confidence in Acting Chairman Umar Damagun.

The statement emphasised Damagun's efforts to stabilise and drive the party towards expansion, which were recognised during the 584th NWC meeting on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, in the party's National Secretariat.

Following the demonstration, the dispute between Wike and the party's presidential candidate for the 2023 election, Atiku Abubakar, appears to be far from over.
