Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje of Kano State
The government of Kano State has said the idea of its free and compulsory education policy was to address the issues of out-of-school children and others in the state.
This was made known by the state Governor Abdullahi Ganduje during the opening of the quarterly meeting organised by the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) with the Executive Chairmen of States Basic Education Boards in Kano on Wednesday.
Ganduje, who was represented by Deputy Governor Dr Nasiru Yusuf-Gawuna, said the State Education Trust Fund was established to finance the education policy which requires great financial responsibility.
According to a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Governor, Hassan Musa-Fagge, Ganduje recognised the contribution of the UBEC, the Federal Ministry of education and other stakeholders to the upliftment of quality education in the state.
Ganduje further promised to continue to pay the funds needed to access grants to enhance the infrastructures of schools and promote the quality of education in Kano State.
Also speaking during the meeting, the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, represented by the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr Hamid Bobboyi, said the government places a high dividend on the education of children in Nigeria, adding that it would keep addressing education issues in the country.
He added that the government would also address the issue of out-of-school children through the Better Education Service for All (BESDA) initiative with support from the World Bank.
UBEC Executive Secretary, represented by Prof. Bala Zakari maintained that the quarterly meetings have helped the UBEC and the SUBEBs to focus on their primary attachment while giving room for discussions around basic education for children in Nigeria.
