Kano: Governor Yusuf Flags Off Free Open-Heart Surgery

The Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has flagged off a free open-heart surgery for patients with cardiac malfunction.

The project was sponsored by the Saudi Arabian government in partnership with Muslim World League and Aminu Kano Teaching hospital (AKTH).

The flag off ceremony took place on Friday at the conference hall of the AKTH.

Speaking at the event, governor Yusuf assured of his administration's commitment to partner any Non- governmenatal Organisations (NGO), individuals and philanthropists to provide specialized training to health personnel and medical care to the patients in need of such services.

The governor also expressed his excitement over the project which is expected to give the health sector a boost in the state.

Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the spokesperson to the governor, made this known in a statement on Friday. 

"We are very much delighted to have you in Kano for this gigantic assistance.

"Kano state is the most populous state in Nigeria with over 21million People.

"We have the most vulnerable people, downtrodden masses that does not have any means of taking care of their health needs.

"We will stick to our campaign promises of building general hospitals across the 44 local governments and Primary health care centres across the state and the re-introduce mobile clinics to cater for the people in the rural areas who are in need of medical attention free of charge," the governor said.

Also speaking, the head of the medical team from Saudi Arabia, Dr Utman Al-uthman Saad, said the medical team comprised of 20 Cardiac surgeons who will perform the surgery and pledged to do their best to achieve the set goals.

Earlier, the Chief Medical director (CMD) of the AKTH, Professor Abdulrahman Abba Sheshe, noted that the intervention was timely.

He explained that there has been an increase of heart diseases related cases especially in Northern Nigeria due to the prevalence of hypertension cases.

He further expressed optimism that the governor Yusuf-led administration would improve the health sector in the state and reduce the number of patients traveling abroad for specialized treatment.
