Kano: Heavy Rains Blurs Drainages, Causes Fatal Accidents

Heavy downpours blur culverts and drainages, leading accidents and deaths

The heavy downpour experienced in Kano in the past few weeks has brought to surface another deadly challenge of poor environmental management in the state.

About five known deaths (unofficial) have occurred at different locations where heavy rain buried the drainages, causing riders or trekkers to fall into deep open culverts leading to their deaths or serious injuries.

Earlier in the week, the corpse of a teenage girl was found around Shataletalen Dangi of Tarauni local government when some good Samaritans were searching for a man and his children who fell into the ditch.

The whereabouts of the man or his kids have not been officially revealed even as at Today, Saturday.

Also on Wednesday of the outgoing week, the Kano State fire service said it found the corpse of a 25 year-old-man, Ghaddafi Sale inside a drain around Kundila housing estate.

Reports said he was washed away by flood.

Though the Kano State Fire service and the state's Ministry of Environment did not answer calls put through to them by AllNews Nigeria, an environmental expert, Suleiman Gidado Isma'il blamed the occurences on poor urban planning system.

Gidado said though Kano has an urban outline, some of the culverts are left open, while vandals who steal the slabs also contriute to the fatl dangers.

He warned that harmful environmental practices have ripple and long time effects, urging people to save their lives through responsible environmental practices.
