Kano Moves To Mitigate Flooding As Rainy Season Sets In

Kano State Government says it has since initiated plans to reduce the impact of flooding in some parts of the state this year.

Speaking to AllNews Nigeria in Kano, the Ministry of environment, through its Public Relations Officer, PRO, Sunusi Abdullahi Kofar Na'isa stated that Governor Ganduje has ordered evacuation  of refuse from the roads of Kano.

He said the exercise would last for ten days before another would be embarked upon, adding that all drainages in the nooks and crannies of the state would be cleaned and rid of refuse that prevents proper passage of water.

Kofar Na'isa said the early preparation resulted from positive results in 2021 when a similar exercise drastically reduced flooding incidences and the casualties from the recorded cases.

According to a report by Kano State Emergency Management Agency in October 2021, 29 people lost their lives and 56 injured due to flooding and other environmental hazards, and 14,244 houses were completely by the flood, this is in sharp contrast to the 57,362 houses were washed away by flooding in 2020.

According to the report, the reduction was as a result of early campaigns, and the cleaning of drainages.

According the PRO, the same measure would be taken earlier to address the problem of flood that yearly claims lives and renders many homeless in the state.

He accused individuals of relitering their environments and carelessly blcoking their drainages almost immiediately after officials have cleared them, which according to him "is not helping matters".

"You will see sometimes when you just finished cleaning the drainages, someone would just through a can in it even before you leave", he lamented.

Kofar Na'isa emphasised the need for people to employ a more positive attitude towards their environment to help government save their lives and properties from flood related disasters.
