Kano: PDP Factional Group Cautions INEC On Creating Chaos

Kano: PDP Factional Group Cautions INEC On Creating Chaos

L-R: Muhammad Abacha, Sadiq Wali

People’s Democratic Party’s factional gubernatorial candidate in Kano, Sadiq Wali has on Saturday asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to refrain from creating chaos in the state by recognizing a factional gubernatoral candidate as the legitimate one for the 2023 governorship election.

Sadiq Wali's gubernatorial campaign committee issued the warning on Saturday in a statement made available to Independent, an online news platform.

The statement, which was signed by the organisation’s Chairman Media Committee Shehu Kura, said INEC has no power, authority, precedence or role in the nomination process of any party except as an observer.

Shehu Kura’s reaction comes on the heels of Kano Resident Electoral Commissioners, Professor Shehu Risqua Arabu’s comment, recognising Muhammad Abacha as PDP Gubernatorial candidate in the state.

Two PDP gubernatorial candidates emerged from parallel congress conducted by Sagagi and Wali faction of the party last month.

The statement by Wali Campaign Organisation reads in part: “The attention of Sadiq Wali gubernatorial campaign committee has been drawn to news reports alleging the Kano state office of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has again injects itself in the midst of the 2023 campaign in the state.

“For the avoidance of any and all doubts, under the 1999 constitution (as amended) and the 2022 electoral act, INEC has no power, authority, precedence or role in the nomination process of any party except as an observer.

The statement mentioned that only a party has absolute power of planning and conducting any nomination primaries.
