Kano: Phone Snatchers Dropping Bodies

In recent times, phone snatching and deaths recorded from the process is on an alarming increase in Kano.

Just last week alone, three people were killed after an encounter with these heartless phone thieves. 

The trend is becoming scary, as hardly passes three consecutive days without an incident, with a strong possibility of the deaths of either all the victims or two out of three.

According to one Khadija who survived a phone snatching episode a few years back, the phone nappers say without the injury or death, people would not actually know it's them (phone snatchers).

One Fatima Aliyu said: "They stopped me and demanded I give them the phone, there was no one around so I gave it to them."

There are a few lucky ones, who like Khadija and Fatima who have their phone snatched with no injuries or just a cut (like in Khadija's case).

But many, especially the men are not so lucky.

Recently, riding a Keke Napep (tricycle) in Kano is risky and being the major mode of transportation, people are forced to take the risk.

According to reports, tricycle operators are mostly accomplices in phone snatching.

The death toll from 2021 to date continues to rise, though no official figures to back this up, reports are more frequent and deaths are reported almost daily.

Two days back, Sunday night, a group of people successfully nabbed some phone snatchers around Gadon Kaya in Kano.

They burnt down the tricycle and beat the thieves to a pulp. 

Some believe jungle justice may just be the way to go in the rising cases of deaths caused by phone snatchers in Kano, as the nappers have grown thick skin that they rob in broad daylight.

Pressed by the rising deaths, some families and friends have taken to social media to show the world a dear one they lost to phone snatchers.

Many of the victims are now nameless to a crime-turn epidemic while others live in fear in a society about to be run down by criminals.
