Kebbi: Tension as PDP, APC clash ahead of council polls

Kebbi: Tension as PDP, APC clash ahead of council polls

There is palpable tension in Kebbi as the opposition People's Democratic Party, PDP, and the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, engage in a heated political tussle ahead of the upcoming Local Government elections in the state.

The PDP had earlier targeted the State deputy governor for expressing optimism about his party's victory in the upcoming council polls, alleging that the APC would rig the elections.

In reaction on Tuesday, the State APC spokesperson, Isah Abubakar Assalafi in a statement urged the State Independent Electoral Commission, KESIEC, to take action against the PDP for alleging that the electoral body was compromised.

The electoral body had recently announced the election timetable, setting the polls for August 31, 2024, and urged all political parties to begin their campaigns.

Assalafi in defence of the deputy governor said he has the right to campaign and be optimistic of the election victory and backed by the electoral laws.

He said: "It has come to our knowledge that the PDP Kebbi State Chapter has issued another Clueless Press Statement signed by its Secretary and targetted at the Deputy Governor of the State.

"First of all, it is on record that the Kebbi State Independent Electoral Commission ( KESIEC ) has released the timetable for the upcoming Local Government Elections slated for the 31st of August 2024 and the Commission urges all Political Parties to Kick Start Preparations for the Election.

"Therefore, the Deputy Governor has the right to Campaign for Votes and to be Optimistic of Victory in the Forthcoming Local Government Council Elections. That Campaign for Votes is allowed under our Electoral Laws regardless of the Personality involved and Optimism for Victory is a Global Practice among Politicians.

"Secondly, the PDP in their Hallucination of imminent defeat, alleged that the State Independent Electoral Commission (KSIEC) is compromised.

"Consequently, we hereby call on the Kebbi State Independent Electoral Commission (KESIEC) to make necessary Legal Consultations in a bid to file a Defamatory Case against the Secretary of the PDP i.e. the Signatory of the Press Release.

"Thirdly, the PDP frivolously alleged the possibility of massive rigging in the upcoming Elections. This is an act of Cowardice by the PDP because they have taken into account the level of achievements of the APC-led Administration in the State which resulted in Massive Support from the good People of Kebbi State.

"Finally, we once again call on the PDP to concentrate on the Forthcoming Elections instead of their attempt to tarnish the image of a High Ranking Personality and an Independent Commission established by the Law."
