A Maseno University student was on Monday shot dead during an anti-government protest within the area that saw six police officers injured.

Around 5:00 p.m., a third-year student was also struck in the neck.

Following the call of the Azimio la Umoja leader, the student joined other protesters.

A police report revealed that during the protests, people broke into the Sairam supermarket in Maseno town and other commercial buildings along the Kisumu-Busia road.

According to the report, they proceeded to build roadblocks out of stones and light bonfires.

"After some time, the students started pelting stones at the police line where they damaged window panes in ten houses and the police station" it reads in parts.

It also stated that the protestors overpowered the officers stationed there after they ran out of tear gas canisters and blanks.

Six police officers were injured during the clashes, according to the report.

"This prompted the officers who had been sent out to quell the intruders to fire live bullets.

"Consequently, the third year student was hit on the neck", the police report added.

He was rushed to Coptic Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
