Kepa Joins Real Madrid On Season-Long Loan

Kepa Arrizabalaga has joined Real Madrid from Chelsea on a season-long loan.

The deal the 28-year-old signed to move to the Bernabeu does not include the option for a permanent transfer.

He will cover for Madrid's regular number one Thibaut Courtois, who is ruled out for most of the season with a long-term knee injury picked up in training.

It is understood that he could be in line to make his Los Blancos debut against Almeria on Saturday.

Chelsea sanctioned his move because he fell down the goalkeeping pecking order at Stamford Bridge following the arrival of Robert Sanchez from Brighton in a deal worth £25 million.

This leaves 31-year-old Marcus Bettinelli as the only other senior goalkeeper in their squad, alongside 20-year-old Lucas Bergstrom and 19-year-old Eddie Beach.

The Spain international joined Chelsea from Athletic Bilbao in August 2018.

He became the club’s first-team goalkeeper after his arrival, playing 54 times and winning the Europa League in his first season.

He subsequently won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA World Club Cup.

In five seasons at the Bridge, he has kept 59 clean sheets in 163 appearances for Chelsea across all competitions.
